Beer Types

Lagers

A Lager is a beer type that is super familiar to almost everyone. It's the style of beer that is most commonly had by many and known for its crispness and refreshing finish. It is pale in colour and lightly flavoured.

Ales

Ales are seemingly the next step up from the lightness of a Lager. If you're looking for something different, there are various types of Ales to choose from. They are full-bodied and have hints of fruit and spice, with a hoppy finish.

There are also Ales that have a more malty finish, which are darker, smoother. They are a little heavier in nature than the typical Ale.

Stout

When most people think of stouts, they generally think of a deep brown beer in a Guinness glass. Stouts owe their dark colour to the roasted barley they are made from. There are rich and creamy, with higher than average alcohol content. One way to test if you have a stout is to see that thick foam ring sitting on top of your beer that holds its form. Stouts in the flavours chocolate, oatmeal, and coffee are all very popular, with other flavors being added all the time.

Malt

Malts tend to cater to those who have a bit of a sweet tooth. They often have hints of caramel, toffee and nuts, to give it that sweeter taste and appear darker in colour.

Beer Styles

Blonde Ale - This type of Ale is very pale in colour and tends to be clear, crisp and dry. It has a low-to-medium bitterness with some sweetness from the malt.

Dark Ale - This type of Ale is a British type of beer that combines hops, yeast and a blend of malts. It is medium brown in colour with a delicate fruity smell.

Pale Ale - This type of Ale originated in England and is a fruity, copper coloured beer.

Red Ale - This type of Ale can either be red or light brown in colour. They are slightly heavy in flavour and contain hints of caramel.

Amber - This type of beer is very versatile. They are full-bodied malt aromas with hints of caramel. Ambers can fall into the Lager or Ale categories.

Fruit - Most fruit beers fall under the category of Ales but they do not necessarily carry the characteristics of a typical Ale. In order to allow the fruit flavour to come through, the malt flavour is not dominant. They may also have a slight bitterness to it as well.

There are several other types of beer styles that offer something for everyone. Whether you're looking for a new beverage for yourself or to cater to your guests, these tips should definitely help find the flavour profile you're looking for. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal tastes and preferences. Remember, when indulging in some adult beverages, please be safe and use alternates modes of transportation if needed. NEVER drink and drive! It's not worth it!
