Lighten Dark Circles Naturally

thesavvymommies

This may seem like a no brainer, but we all engage in activities that cause us to lose out on sleep. Sleep deprivation contributes to the darkening of our under eyes. The skin under our eyes are very thin. When we skip out on sleep, we can cause our eyes to become tired, which means we start squinting more and cause the blood vessels under our eyes to become enlarged. When this happens, voila, we have dark circles. Lets try to avoid this. Try to go to bed at a reasonable hour and get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

1. Stay Hydrated

This part is super important! Our bodies are made up of the majority of water and when we are not drinking enough of it, our skin pays the price. Our under eye area becomes dull looking and our dark circles begin to appear. If you can, try to drink at least 8 glasses per day. A great way to start doing this is to get a water bottle, fill it up and challenge yourself to drink a certain amount of bottles a day. It makes it a little more fun, if that's even possible.

2. Get Rest

This may seem like a no brainer, but we all engage in activities that cause us to lose out on sleep. Sleep deprivation contributes to the darkening of our under eyes. The skin under our eyes are very thin. When we skip out on sleep, we can cause our eyes to become tired, which means we start squitting more and cause the blood vessels under our eyes to become enlarged. When this happens, voila, we have dark circles. Lets try to avoid this. Try to go to bed at a reasonable hour and get at least 7-8 hours of sleep a night.

3. Keeping Your Skin Hydrated

Not only is it important to drink water and stay hydrated with liquids, we have to do the same with our skin. As we age, we lose collagen and our skin becomes thinner. When we focus on keeping our skin hydrated, we are helping our skin to stay supple and full of life. This helps to minimize dark circles because we are not allowing our skin to become dry and create those fine wrinkles we are all trying to avoid. Some examples of great moisturizers are: Neutrogena Hydroboost, Tatcha Water Cream and L'oreal Paris Revitalift Anti-wrinkle care. There are so many out there. You need to find what works best for you and what fits into your budget, as some of these can get quite expensive.

4. Almond Oil

This is a an excellent natural remedy for dark circles! You can find this in your local grocery store and it's very inexpensive. Almond oil is great for so many things, especially the skin. It contains antioxidants, Vitamins A and K and helps to keep the skin hydrated and smooth. You want to use sweet almond oil and not the bitter version, because there are two options.

Almond Oil Treatment

Things you will need:

- 100% sweet almond oil (The brand I currently use is Suraj)

- A clean Dish (If you plan to use the oil for other purposes as well)

Directions:

- Take your clean dish and pour a few drops of almond oil into it

- Wash your hands with soap, so you have no dirt/bacteria on your hands (You want to make sure you don't skip this step because you will be placing the oil on your face, close to your eyes)

- Take your finger and lightly dip it into the oil (You do not need a lot. A little really goes a long way)

- Lightly dab the dark circles area under your eyes until all of the area is covered. Again, a lot goes a long way, so do not use too much. You want the skin to be covered but not dripping in oil.

- Leave on overnight if you want, wash off in the morning and then continue with your normal skin care routine.

- Try to do this at least every night, if not twice a day for better results. You should see the area start to lightening in approx. two weeks (This may be shorter or longer, depending on how dark your circles are)

** Before trying this under your eyes, please test a small patch somewhere else on your skin, just in case you have a reaction to the oil. If you experience no reactions, give it a try on your dark circles.

** You also have the option of adding a few drops of essential oils to the oil (If using in a clean dish). Some options include: Lavender Oil, Tea Tree etc.

An example of a Before and After picture of using Almond Oil for 2 Weeks:

Dark circles are something that occurs naturally throughout the aging process but if you follow some or all of the suggestions above, hopefully we can slow that process down a little and minimize the darken effect.

Try it out and feel free to let us know how it works for you! We would love to hear from you!
